Well, I’m out from under my rock.
I’ve got story #2 edited about as good as it’s going to get (is it ever perfect?) and I’ll be clearing that off my desk on Monday. Hopefully it won’t come back with a “Scrap this and start all over” note on it. Keep your fingers crossed for me.
I’ve been talking lately about the publishing industry, as most of you know. What I didn’t comprehend, because there was no way to know, was how my published status changed many things I wasn’t expecting. This last week (and I think it’s most likely due to the fabulous Lori Foster who has included me in her newsletter, added my link prominently on her website, and referred interviewers in my direction) I’ve been contacted about a variety of different things that I “qualify” for now that I’m published. Invitations to things that are available only for the published author. On Kate Rothwell’s journal, SandyO ranted here about how the RWA is divided into the “published” and “everyone else”. I had no idea what she was talking about. I’m beginning to see it now. I won’t offer an opinion either way, because I’m not qualified. I didn’t participate much in anything RWA as an unpubbed and I’m stumbling along as a pubbed.
On another topic altogether…
Stopping by Alison’s site I read her post about author cover blurbs, which in turn lead me to the blog post and comment she was referring to. Suffice it to say I was horrified by the “vitriolic” banter there. Good grief. Acid eating through my computer screen. I admire the author whose blog it is for keeping her comments open and refusing to delete the nasty replies. Still I cringe for her. Like Larissa said in her blog post, a blog is like a person’s home. Reading the comments on the blog I’m discussing made me feel violated, like I visited a friend’s home and found that it had been ransacked, which is pretty much what happened. Yuck, yuck, yuck, all around.

Yeah on finishing story #2! I’m sure your editor will love it:wink:

It’s funny, because I feel the same way about visiting a blog and finding nastiness in the comments. It’s like I went to their house and found a guest who is behaving badly, trashing the host’s house.
Interesting about the pubbed/unpubbed division. I hope you’ll let us know what you see as your journey takes you deeper and deeper into that mysterious land…
