Recently Emma posted about historicals being too hard to sell these days.
I commented that I’d noticed some well known historical authors were beginning to write contemporaries. The latest being my all-time favorite author Lisa Kleypas.
From the Avon Authors’ Board:
I love writing historical novels–they are all I’ve written since the age of 21, and I just turned 40 this year! But I am eager to stretch my wings a little and try a new challenge . . . so yes, I am going to be writing three contemporary novels for St. Martin’s Press, as well as continuing to write the Wallflowers for Avon. I will post more about this on my website in the coming weeks

Thanks again–
Warmly,
Lisa

At least she’s still going to write historicals…for awhile.
by Jordan February 25th, 2005 at 10:57 amThat’s a bit scary. I understand about the not so famous historical romance authors branching out into other genres to gain more recognition, but when Lisa-EFFING-Kleypas does it!? The world is ending!! *G* But seriously, I heard last year, at the RWA convention, that Kleypas was told to lighten her historicals up because darker historicals aren’t as popular as they used to be.
by Evangeline February 25th, 2005 at 2:02 pmYes, scary. I am very proud to say that my first contract was for 3 historicals. Although I write futuristics, historicals have always been my first love.
Of course the bright side is that as the huge historical authors switch their focus to contemps it leaves room for up and coming historical writers. Or so I hope.
by SylviaOh…..my post got eaten. I said, I remember when she came and spoke at our chapter’s meeting that she talked about getting out of her comfort zone. So for her it might not be all about the market. I know Pam Britton is originally published in historicals, but her first contemporary just came out this week–a story she’s had for TEN years.
