Tivo

You know, I’ve been waiting over two years for my cable company to offer DVR (Tivo) in my area. Yesterday, on the way out to lunch, hubby and I grabbed two of our cable remotes that were looking pretty worn out and took them to the local cable office for exchange. While waiting, I noticed their advertising for their DVR programming. (Now, a year ago, I signed up for their newsletter which was supposed to email me when they had DVR, but I never got it.)

So, anyway, the cable company came out today and installed the DVR. We’re happy because with 400+ channels, we never seem to find what we want to watch actually airing at the time we want to watch it.

Since I never find time to watch more than an hour of TV here and there, it’s nice to know that when I do manage to sit down, I can watch what I want, instead of just whatever’s on.

Anyone else have Tivo?

Something I learned that I’m glad I did

Being able to cut out information at the start of a story. The reader doesn’t get to know everything all at once, and if it takes several chapters to learn why someone is the way they are, it’s more fun. When appropriate. I like it that I can have my cp tell me I don’t need to mention that yet, and I can cut it out and not feel tortured over it. And I love it when a reader tells me they have no idea why something happened the way it did, but they can’t wait to keep reading and find out!

I used to think, “But you’ll understand them better if you know this!” and often, that’s true. But do we ever really know a person completely within a few minutes of meeting them?

Anyway, I’m probably rambling, but it’s late and I’m super tired, and I had a rough day. So I hope you’ll forgive me! (f)

BTW, the smilies look pretty cool in FireFox, but they look like crap in IE. If you’re not using FF yet, you should switch!! It’s a fabulous browser with so many more choices in the right-click menu. And the tabbed browsing just rocks. (Sorry, geek moment. Told ya I was tired…)

Techie Stuff again

After playing with the new WordPress system (2.0.2) on the Allure Authors website, I finally upgraded my main site with the new software. The upgrade was simple and easy. Aside from the backing up of my database and a few key files, the upgrade itself took less than 5 mins. (Love that about WP)

I waited for a variety of reasons, not the least of which was plug-in compatibility. My main site has only a couple plug-ins. One was made obsolete by the upgrade, but I found a suitable replacement. My blog, however, is plugged-in and hacked from here to Sunday. Not by the designer, but by me. I always want new techie toys.

So I may hire out the upgrading of my blog, and then someone else can curse, sweat, and heart-race themselves through it. :(

*****Update*****

I did it myself. Took much longer, due to the need to diasable everything, but it went off without a hitch and now I’m hooked up. *g*

Yes, I’m a geek. I can’t help it.

In other news, I lost 5 lbs this past week. Yay!!!

Jees…

I spent the last week trying to clean everything work-related off my plate. You know, that stuff that sits there waiting for you to have time for it? However, all my stuff has a deadline on it, so putting it off just nags at me in the back of my mind until I feel rushed and can’t focus because I’m trying to do everything at once. I still have two more projects that need to be finished: edits to Kiss of the Night, and wrapping up a short for AQP. (The last theme was sci-fi, the next one is magical) Once these two are done, I will have officially, completely cleared all past work from my desk forever. :cheer: In the future, I hope to find a better balance than selling everything I ever finished in the first part of the year and spending the latter part of the year trying to edit it all on deadlines.

Of course this means I have to write all new stuff under deadlines, instead of having the somewhat consoling knowledge that at least the work is done, even if it needs some work.

There’s always something. *g*

I’m also back to thinking about my website again, and what to do now that futuristic works are scheduled for release and more is in the hands of my agent. The wisest thing would probably be to start all over with a design that says sexy, but without a time constraint. However, I’m still very attached to my present site design, and I’m also still building an audience. But then again, do I want to build an audience that considers me primarily a historical author? Or do I want to build an audience who considers me a place to go for sexy stories in any time period? I’ve been hashing this out for months and months, and switched out the very historical weblog design for something less historical, but I’m still very torn and unsure. Probably because I have no idea what I’d want if I didn’t have my present design. I can point out a few great futuristic designs, but nothing has really struck me in the “everything goes” sector of web design, and I wouldn’t want to trade out my very unique site for one that closely resembles other author sites. Ya know?

Font Help

For those of you who would know – would you happen to have the name of the fonts used on the BBA cover?

Sick and Tired of being…

sick and tired. *sigh* Good grief, too much work and not enough editing. As I’m typing here, I see that my brand spanking new installation of WordPress on my new host doesn’t have my smilies plugged into the post panel. *grumbles* I really need to keep a folder that details all of my hacks and plugins. I never remember them all. My newest cool plugin is the WP-Amazon plugin. Boy, did I need that one.

Moving Around

It’s super late (for me anyway *g*) so no blog, but after months of waffling and partial aborted moves sylviaday.com is now moved into its new server. If things seem to load slowly, I apologize. I have a lot of baggage and it takes a little bit to settle in, but give it a day or two and my home on the web should moving along. :)

Hugs to Alison and Emma for bringing the moving van, and Walt for doing the heavy lifting.

If you’re looking for a fun blog I suggest PBW. She’s got a great skewer of the RWA going on. (Thanks to Jordan for pointing the way.)
