In the beginning, there were mortals and the angels who were tasked to watch over them. Tempted by the delights of mortality and guilty of illicitly sharing forbidden knowledge, the Watchers fell out of favor and became the Fallen. An elite team of seraphim enforcers—the Sentinels—was sent to restore order and balance in the world. The Fallen were stripped of their wings, which cost them their souls. Without their souls, they could no longer sustain themselves through the life-force energy of mortals. They were forced to obtain nourishment through more direct means, becoming blood-drinkers. Because the Fallen remained powerful, some Watchers were spared the fate of their brethren so they could assist the Sentinels. Transfused with demon blood to prevent vampirism, they regained their souls but lost their immortality. Cursed with partial bestial natures, they shift forms between beast and man. Today, the Sentinel angels continue their duties, living hidden among mortals. They use the Shifters as herding dogs to keep the Fallen contained.
