One of the many benefits of being a published author are the increased opportunities to give back to the community through charitable support.
Many of the reader/author events Sylvia attends around the country benefit charities that are local to those events. In addition Sylvia funds the Daylight Scholarship, and a selected charity through Day It Forward, a monthly feature on Beyond Words.
She has also contributed content to the following books, the proceeds from which she donates entirely to charity.
One of the recurring features on Beyond Words is Day It Forward, where readers are encouraged to share stories about the important work of charities close to their hearts. Each month, Sylvia chooses one recommended charity to highlight and support with a donation. The Daylight Scholarship, funded by Sylvia, awards up to five scholarships for the payment of conference registration fees for the Romance Writers of America® Conference. Applicants must be RWA members who are current or previous year RITA® finalists. Members may apply by submitting a personal letter stating their financial need, their serious pursuit of a romance writing career, and why they believe attendance at the conference in the year of their application will benefit their romance writing career.
The fund is overseen by Romance Writers of America. Applications should be directed to RWA, attention: Daylight Scholarship, 14615 Benfer Rd., Houston, TX 77069, with “Daylight Scholarship application” in the subject line.
Benefit Book: Premiere
Romance Writers of America is dedicated to advancing the professional interests of career-focused romance writers through networking and advocacy. Proceeds from anthology sales will help to fund RWA’s programs and services.
Benefit Book: The Promise of Love
One Way Farm Children’s Home provides residential care 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. The agency provides an Animal Education Therapy Program, an Employment Training Program, Counseling Services and a Youth Program to further the healing of thier children, all very unique programs. They have served approximately 8,500 children and have been in business since 1976. They are licensed by the Job and Family Services and serve children from throughout the State of Ohio. They are a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation and located in Butler County in southwestern Ohio. Their continuing goal is to provide for the best interest of the child.
The Lori Foster Bookjunkys (a yahoo group for readers and writers) sponsors an ongoing “Troop Project.” Headed up by Laurie Damron and enhanced by collections at the annual “Reader and Author Get Together,” items and money (for shopping) are donated so that several times a year care packages filled with fun and sometimes necessary items can be mailed off to various active-duty military troops.
